EMDR -- Therapy for Trauma and More

EMDR has been shown to facilitate our natural ability to recover from traumatic memories. Common symptoms of trauma include intrusive thoughts and images, numbing, anger and hypervigilance, as well as substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and panic.

EMDR therapy can be useful for:

               * physical abuse and domestic violence
               * disturbing one-time events
                         *
substance abuse
                              * incest and sexual abuse
                                     * returning military veterans

In an EMDR session, we start with a current issue and work to resolve the current issue by addressing old memories. The result is that you move forward more quickly than with traditional talk therapy. EMDR involves brief exposure to a difficult memory and simultaneous bilateral (two-sided) stimulation in the form of eye movements, sounds, or hand-held tappers.

EMDR  is also sometimes used to desensitize and reprocess addiction memories. This includes relapse triggers--people, places, and things that can lead to cravings for drugs and alcohol.
