Recovering from Sexual Abuse
Many survivors of sexual abuse try to mask the feelings and emotions connected to childhood experiences. Often people are well into adulthood when they begin to recognize the connection between the dysfunction in their lives and their past trauma. Therapy can help you recover at your own pace and on your own path.
Survivors may have unresolved feelings about persons who may have known about the abuse and did not intervene. Anger is a normal part of healing. Sometimes just acknowledging the abuse to one person can have huge benefits.
EMDR is a useful therapy for targeting the parts of the abuse experience that most contributed to negative self-beliefs and difficulties with trust. Because it is not exclusively “talk therapy,” EMDR lets you work on issues related to the trauma without verbally revisiting every detail. EMDR therapy can help you to resolve the pain and move on with your life with renewed hope, self-love, and an openness to life.
